Review of Spellbound (2002) by Sherief A — 02 Sep 2008
The great thing about Spellbound was watching those kids' faces and reactions once they spell words like "logorrhea" correctly. The thing is, during the later rounds, it was not a competition anymore where the one who studied harder will win, and this is an additional reason to hate English language and how its limiting at times. I, too, see it as an other form of child abuse.
There was no need to base the documentary on an "American dream" background. After all, the kids the documentary followed was not chosen as ethnically diverse unintentionally, was too obvious point for the parents to talk about.
