Review of Speed Racer (2008) by Wesley M — 23 Jun 2010
Speed Racer was a film that had several factors that could have made it decent, but none of them fully delivered. Some of the cast, such as John Goodman as Pops and Matthew Fox as Racer X, were genuinely good in their roles.
....but several other performances were dull and unimpressive (the youngest member of the Racer family seemed like he was trying to do a lame mix of James Cagney and Dennis the Menace). The visual palette for the film was fresh and original.
....but it was all style without substance and the camp was way overboard. The race scenes were at times fun.....but the overuse of CGI made the film feel as if it had no heart or humanity throughout and its used so liberally part of me thinks the film would have been better if it was completely computer animated.
As it is the film feels like a green-screen overdose with none of the thrills a film like "Sin City" could do with the same approach.
