Review of Special (2006) by Joshua T — 01 Aug 2009
Don't let the synopsis, trailer or poster fool you; this is not a superhero comedy. This is basically a drama about delusion, addiction and looking for purpose in life. It actually gets downright depressing and sad at times, which I thought gave everything a more realistic feel and allowed me to connect with the story and its characters more than any other 'real' superhero movie I've seen.
The acting is top notch. I wouldn't be disappointed if Michael Rapaport received an Oscar nod for this, but that would be a perfect world. Even though this isn't really about superpowers, it has all the qualities needed for a great superhero story.
I would choose to watch this over the Dark Knight EVERY single time if I had to make a choice. And if you do watch it, don't expect to feel like I do right away, if at all. I didn't realize how much I loved it until the perfect ending came along.
