Review of Special (2006) by Deborah H — 07 Oct 2009
This isnt your average super-hero movie. So, this nerdy guy with a routine life has aspirations to make a difference in the world. His insecurity about being normal combined with his new prescription drug has him fully believing that he is a "super" hero, when its obvious to the world he is actually nuts.
I think we've seen this plot before in some movie (a normal guy posing as a super hero) but this is the first time I saw it done realistically, removed from the slapstick perspective.
I liked this movie. I think we all can identify with the main character - at least I did. He genuinely wanted to make the world better, but stuck in the routine of normality.
After coming to the conclusion that he has strengths, powers and abilities that the average person does not have, he decides to put them to use in crime fighting. The best movies leave the viewer touched in my humble opinion; no matter which emotion your touched with. In this movie, the eventual sobering of this guy is touching to watch simply out of pity and that made it for me. The guy is just "off-his-rocker" and you find that the world is harsh to those who are crazy.
The movie is a little un-climatic with an awkwardly, but inspiring, ending. That was what kept this movie from being a great movie (the 4 star range).
The coolest thing about this movie is giving the viewer BOTH perspectives -a) his perspective, where he does have powers and b) those around him who see him trippin'.
