Review of Special (2006) by Tony P — 17 Nov 2009
Despite its amateurism, Special is a profoundly moving and original portrait of the superhero icon. With a weighty premise, the film is realized both comedically and dramatically, rotating lethargically on the axis of its unique tone.
Les, the protagonist, imagines he has teleportation, invisibility, telepathy, and other powers that symbolize his introverted struggle with loneliness and incompatibility in society. The performance of Michael Rapaport is nothing short of exquisite, traveling an arc of a man collapsing in vulnerability, celebrating in confidence, then back again.
It's a beautiful tale of loneliness and humanity with a sick bassy soundtrack and a phenomenal ending.
