Review of Special (1967) by Zac M — 01 May 2009
Michael Rapaport's greatest performance of all time shines in this heart felt indie flick. An interesting concept and well-executed plot, Special revolves around a lowly metermaid that partakes in a medical drug study and discovers that he has developed super powers.
Les, played by Rapaport, begins delivering "justice" around the city. Besides being comical, Special is a story of what it's like to be something more in the world of the mundane. Slow and boring at times, the film's pace moves deathly stagnant throughout.
The beautiful performance of Rapaport is the film's greatest asset. He embodies a character that the audience feels for and roots on. Hiding behind a C celebrity status for these past years, Rapaport proves himself through his work and puts himself on a whole new level.
Special is gritty filmmaking at its best. In the same vain as Punch Drunk Love, the film has a splochy film texture to it combined with calm decisive dialogue. Independent film that shows a lot of heart.
