Review of Spartan (2004) by Percy L — 15 Mar 2004
Still bored, but I finally got some car repairs done this weekend. After getting my Honda out of the back yard and into running condition again, I discovered that weather does eventually take its toll on motor vehicles. All the scraping and repriming aside, the big problem I was having was this horrendous noise coming from the brakes and suspension-- Hmm I think those are pretty important... Anyways, armed with a new set of rims and a full bottle of brake cleaner, me and Curtis set to work. Long story short-- After a LOT of grease, a blown out car jack, several close calls involving gravity, one sheared bolt and a few lost springs we got the car back into one piece and running.
HA-- it even rides better-- not a bad way to spend Sunday afternoon.
The next project is to make the insides actually appealing to be in-- new carpets and stereo! Maybe I'll put in a blender too-- chicks dig car blenders :D.
Afterwards we went to go see Spartan. Great film, but I both benefitted and suffered from seeing Ebert and Roeper's review the week before. I suppose I never would have gone to see it if I hadn't heard their rave reviews. However, they gave away too much of the freaking plot! That's the trouble I find with most movie trailers these days too-- you basically see all the best parts of a movie, including crucial plot points, in the 3 minute trailer. Adding insult to injury was the 5 minute spiel each of them did to dissect (and thereby ruin)all of the great cinematic devices used in the film. Normally I really like Roger Ebert's reviews, but they really blew it on this one.
Go see this film if you know nothing about it-- don't even see the trailer. I guarantee it will keep you on the edge of your seat-- but it's way better if you're in the dark.
On an entirely unrelated note I've decided that I spend way too much time on the computer at work so I'm going to try turning the damn thing off for a week. Aside from short periods of data analysis and sporadic emails, I'll be offline for a while. Let's see how long I can keep this up.....
