Review of Spartan (2004) by Chris W — 03 Aug 2004
At first I was kind of intrigued about this movie. I couldn't really figure out what was happening (although after reading the back of the box again, that kind of ruined it almost) and I spent a while thinking, "What the HELL?" Which was fine...because I kind of like movies to keep me interested by confusing me at first.
Once I figured out what was going on (which actually didn't take that much thinking), I started to become really annoyed. It's kind of hard to explain but...you know how most movies have the center plot that everything is based around, but still have some small side stories to kind of keep you guessing about everything? Ha. This movie was completely and only based on the plot. Every single thing that occurred had something to do with the plot. You never had any side stuff to make you wonder or to keep to off-kilter. It was just straight plot, plot, plot. It was very...here's the plot and whether you like it or not, we're shoving it down your throat. Which was really just...aggravating.
The acting pretty much sucked, as well. Every line Val Kilmer spoke sounded like it was being forced out of him. Or as though he'd never acted before. Everyone else seemed rather stiff too. It made for an overall awkward feeling.
Also, when the movie ended, I was pretty much shocked. There was KIND of a resolution, but in my opinion, it sucked. I didn't even realize it was a resolution until the credits started to run. And then it was one of those movies where you're just like, "What?! It's over? What the hell!" and then you're annoyed by it for a while.
Can you tell I didn't like this? Yeah, I think it's quite obvious.
