Review of Spartan (2004) by Tizzle H — 05 Dec 2004
Hi kids. I've realised I've been losing the journal war with Phil. It's sad, but Phil just better at writing things online about movies he's just seen than me. But no more.
I picked up Spartan from the local supermarket as I'd earned a free rental thanks to my many purchases of fruity pepples. I didn't know anything about it going in, except that Val Kilmer was in it. Depending on you, this could be good or bad. For me its good.
I didn't know it was a Mamet film until the credits came up. Again this can be good or bad. In this case it turn out fairly well.
The movie is a thriller, with Kilmer playing a special ops agent trying to find a kidnapped president's daughter. It movie has some twists, but judging from where they were in the film, I don't think they were supposed to be shocking. Just to make the film a little more interesting. And for me it works.
My only problem with the film is Kilmer saying baby all the time. Probably a Mamet thing, it just got annoying for me.
I think this movie was made specfically for my cousin Mike, who is in the military and loves Val Kilmer. It's all his favorite things combined. I'll be bringing it up with him at Xmas.
