Excellent film. People are not supposed to know where Kilmer's character comes from. He doesn't exist, plain and simple. "...you should stay out of the desert" because the smell of AMERICAN smoke travels.
Mamet is all about the details. A single missed word changes the phrase's entire meaning, and thus watching it on TV in the background is not something you just do. Sit. Watch it. Don't do anything else.
You'll get it. But distract yourself and it's a missed opportunity for one of the deepest movies I've seen in a while.
