Review of Spartan (2004) by Robert S — 19 Dec 2007
An unsung classic in my book - this is just a uniquely styled film with great writing, direction and acting. It's almost stream-of-consciousness as we follow the exploits of an ill-defined black-ops government agent and his pursuit of the President of the USA's kidnapped daughter.
It's a simple plot at core, but you really have to concentrate to pick up on the craftily placed narrative clues which bind this story together. Superbly paced and with a gripping tension throughout.
Kilmer is fantastic as the agent - a guy so immersed in the strange parallel world of covert warfare, he seems almost alien at times. And Mamet has populated the script with some beautiful detail around the subject, which really adds an extra dimension.
Brilliant.
