Review of Spartan (2004) by Andy W — 16 Mar 2010
Entertaining for both good and bad reasons: Good = nicely shot/lit, story is crisp and involving, some good performances. Bad = Mamet's dialogue ranges from great to laughable at the drop of a hat.
Val Kilmer's delivery is again, brilliantly bad at times (although that could be down to the dialogue), but that said he does work well in the main role. If Michael Mann had made this, it could have been another 'Heat'.
Instead it has flashes of excellence, let down by pretentious banter.
