Review of Spanking the Monkey (1994) by Joe M — 11 Jul 2007
Only needs to be seen by a David O. Russell completionist, and even then with caution. Though he would go on to write and direct great films, his debut shows no signs of the career to come.
Rather risque in nature, Russell doesn't handle the story with the grace it requires to be seen as artful. A film that had potential to be in the same vein as Harold and Maude or The Graduate comes off as low-brow filth on par with American Pie - but without the laughs.
