Review of Spanglish (2004) by Sandee D — 14 Apr 2011
This movie did not deliver ANYTHING that I would want to see in a movie. But I loved it from beginning to end.
If you went to a party and hung out with the gossip for twenty minutes, this is the story you would hear about one of the couples that was scraping by. As horrible as the story is about relationship, it's an equally wonderful story about doing the right thing and beating the odds.
I loved the coming of age story. Loved the almost affair story. Loved to hate the actual affair that almost killed a marriage story. Loved the coming to America and making it story.
The movie made me wrestle with myself. I'm against divorce, generally speaking, and I was able to authentically sympathize with the characters toward the propensity of that end. I'm generally against people illegally entering the country, yet I understood the struggle of being in a new place not knowing the language and the drive to overcome and succeed.
This is one of those movies that I believe will stand out in later years as something remarkable. It will never be on the top of anyone's list, but it is a movie that means something.
I was shocked that Sandler was in it. He was fabulous (probably the most shocking element of all) and I watch more of his films now because of his Spanglish performance.
