Review of Spanglish (2004) by Gustavmarkovic31 . — 11 Sep 2012
A great blend of comedy mixed with drama, This is just as good as As Good as it Gets, lol. Couldn't resist.
Adam Sandler's best work to date, he really does work for drama, despite his 'colourdul' career in comedy. Tea Leoni is great as Sandler's struggling wife who ignores other people's feelings most of the time. Paz Vega is excellent and utterly astonishing as Flor the new house maid, who subtly tries to stitch the family together, despite her own troubles with her daughter. And Shelbie Price is good as the daughter of Leoni and Sandler, who is extremely self-conscious and knows everyone is thinking it. Victoria Lune steals every scene she is in as Leoni's mother.
Mixing family drama with sarcastic and inter-cultural comedy really works well and was delightful.
The performances by all are beyond what I suspected and were more than capable of dealing with such a hard story to work up to.
The ending is sad and seemingly unfinished, but doesn't adopt the oft-used typical ending of families coming together and working out their problems.
