Review of Space Cowboys (2000) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
Taking a stop at an old legendary actor by the name of Clint Eastwood with today's review of "Space Cowboys.".
Space Cowboys isn't the most original of stories. Clint plays Frank, a long retired Air Force pilot. When a satellite with a system he designed is in trouble, Frank is the only man for the job. Of course, he won't do it... without the help of his veteran buddies. Hawk (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry (Donald Sutherland) and Tank (James Garner). They are reunited with Bob Gerser (James Cromwell) who cheated them out of a space mission many years ago. But the question seems to be not whether they'll save the world, but rather, are they too old? The answer is "not a chance." Clint gives a fine performance as the surly ol' pro Frank, and has excellent chemistry with the whole cast. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't far behind as a grand performer as something I've never seen him play as: someone in a good mood. The charisma between the two of them is excellent. Donald Sutherland plays the intellectual womanizer (which has NEVER been pulled off in the last 50 years) quite well. But it seemed as though we never truly got anything out of Tank; his part seemed almost written out except for a few religious references. As I said, the story is nothing new, but it has a bit more sense than most space movies these days. A fine collection of old boys showing the young boys how to do it, Space Cowboys earns 8.5 out of 10.
