It's people... or was I not supposed to say that? Well, you probably knew, and have probably seen parodies of different scenes from here repeatedly without knowing it! I'm actually surprised that this movie isn't in the popular culture, considering that it deals with global warming as well as a population explosion.
Of course, back then, global warming was thought to cause heat waves, not ice ages.
