Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Sean W — 03 May 2008
Hmmm....a movie from 1973 predicting global warming, food shortages, over-population, high unemployment, etc., etc., you can't help but feel a sense of "how did they know" watching it in 2008.
Of course, you have to get past the fact that characters supposedly living in 2022 still have 70s haircuts, play video games that haven't evolved beyond the Atari 2600, don't know what a cell phone is and still watch dial-controlled analog TVs (although given the time period, I let them off the hook for all of that).
Sadly, the film isn't as effective as it should be, given the lack of tension...but Heston is in his element as a gruff, does-what-he-needs-to-do-to-get-by cop.
