Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Todd Y — 30 Mar 2010
It's 2022 and a polluted, overpopulated world is suffering from a drastic food shortage. Homicide Detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) is investigating the murder of Simonson (Joseph Cotten), a wealthy executive for the synthetic food conglomerate called Soylent.
The case leads Thorn to a disturbing revelation about the source of Soylent's products. Several decades of pop culture saturation have likely spoiled the twist ending of this film for most people, but Soylent Green is still an effective slice of hard-hitting dystopian sci-fi.
This cautionary film is also notable for featuring the last performance by Edward G. Robinson.
