"Southside With You" is exactly how romantic comedies should be like in this day and age. It's smart, not recycled at all, and it gives us interesting characters that we can get invested in.
Throw your political views out the window going into this movie because yes, this movie is about how Barack and Michelle Obama met. It gives off a Richard Linklater-esque vibe with the film being very walking and talking centric, much like Linklater's "Before" trilogy.
If you are one of those people who dislike the Obama's for one reason or another you still shouldn't have too hard of a time liking this movie due to the fact that they don't focus on these two characters being the famous "Obama's" we know today.
It's a movie about how two people met, and their names just happen to be Barack, and Michelle. Pretend that they're different people if you must, but see the film anyway if you're a fan of the genre.
