Review of Southside with You (2016) by Brandon W — 26 Dec 2016
Southside With You is directed and written by Richard Tanne, and it stars Parker Swayers and Tika Sumpter in a romance about the first date for Michelle and Barack Obama that they have before they got together.
I was curious enough for this knowing the fact that I haven't heard of a film that is about the president since W., and I haven't seen a romance aspect like that since the Before Trilogy. This is Parker Sawyers's first filming role, and not only does he look like a young Barack Obama, but he also sounds like him too.
Tika Sumpter gives a great performance also, and the two of them have fantastic chemistry that is basically the main point of the film. It didn't feel like any of the Before films as the dialogue in this is different in terms of what they talk about, and it felt a bit more cinematic than those films.
Even when you don't know what their personal life is like, the movie gives enough details for the viewers to know about the characters before they're at the White House. It's honestly the acting and writing in this that holds this film, and knowing in my opinion that it's well-acted and it kept me interested with the dialogue, Southside With You is a wonderful film that I'm sure pays respect to the family.
