Review of Southpaw (2015) by Jb B — 06 Sep 2015
Once again, Gyllenhaal keeps impressing. After his previous hit, and one of my favourites, 'Nightcrawler', he is beginning to become one of Hollywood's finest. Within this film, he performs outstandingly and is believable throughout the entire film.
The film gives a fresh new story and tone to the boxing genre and therefore gives a sense that we haven't seen this type of film before. It doesn't give predictable and cliché scenes and keeps you attached all of the way through. Every scene is important to the story and is exciting throughout. From the emotional scenes to the intense and intriguing fight scenes.
The fighting scenes were excellently shot and edited and were believable throughout and had you on the edge of your seat and rooting for Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), just like watching a proper boxing match. The emotional scenes link in importantly with the story and help it progess really well and the film doesn't feel forced or rushed to make you feel this way about certain things.
Overall, I will give this film a 3 as it is hugely entertaining throughout, connects with you deeply and is definitely up there with all of the boxing greats.
