Review of Southpaw (2015) by Moses O — 02 Nov 2015
You've seen the film's story a dozen times before, but Gyllenhaal (PRISONERS, END OF WATCH), McAdams (ABOUT TIME, MEAN GIRLS), and Whitaker's (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, GHOSTDOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI) performances combined with Fuqua's (and Director of Photography Mauro Fiore's) phenomenal camera work elevate the material.
Gyllenhaal, especially, brings a surprising amount of depth and subtlety to his character, allowing the film, in the least, to be an impressive character study. Essentially, you will be watching the complete ROCKY series condensed into a 2-hour flick, but take that any way you like.
