Review of Southpaw (2015) by Frank C — 17 Nov 2015
If only this film had starred Eminem, what a film that could be. Not really. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a typically assured performance as the title boxer Billy Hope. However, the writing is poor, relying too heavily on the action inside the ring instead of outside it.
The relationships around which the story revolves are too weak to hold the weight of the plot. Still worth a watch for fans of the genre, but a far cry from the films Southpaw wishes to emulate.
