Review of Southpaw (2015) by Jake M — 08 Jun 2017
Southpaw is a dark film about a undefeated boxer named Billy "The Great" Hope who loses it all after a personal tragedy that lead from one bad event to another and he must clean up his act in order to overcome all that has happened to him I don't know how to really explain it without spoiling it so I am going to leave it at that.
Anyway knowing the plot to this movie you can already tell it's predictable and cliche, however the event this man goes through is actually a much darker event then usual, and you actually sort of feel for this character.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy "The Great" Hope and he does a great job as a part, I think of all the underrated actors out their Gyllenhaal is definitely the most, and the fact that he can transform the way his body looked like in Nightcrawler (2014) to this characters unbelievable.
Though Gyllenhaal was great I honestly thought Forrest Whitaker stole the show as retired boxer Titus "Tick"Wills, Whitaker and Gyllenhaal have great chemistry together. Southpaw does have flaws because it becomes somewhat predictable and there was times where I thought it got a little to much like Rocky (1976) not saying that its not really a bad just saying don't expect it to be a brand new type of boxing movie.
Southpaw is a raw, gritty, dark, and violent film that though isn't perfect it is still a good film about never giving up no matter how hard times get, if you are a fan of inspirational sports films than I recommend this film for you.
