Review of Southpaw (2015) by Tyler K — 20 Aug 2015
Southpaw carried far too much buzz from Harvey Weinstein - claiming he would *ensure* Gyllenhaal would get an Oscar nomination. Sadly, Gyllenhaal's performance is not Oscar worthy. Normally that wouldn't be a problem.
Films can be great without a single award to it's name. However, in a story as predictable as this, an Oscar worthy performance is the only thing that can save it from being completely forgettable.
In fact I'm fairly certain Eminem's "Phenomenal" will achieve a longer life in pop culture and critical circles than Southpaw itself.
