Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Corey R — 26 Mar 2011
Watched this again last night. Still the best Philip K. Dick film ever made. That is, while it's not based on any one of Dick's stories, it is obviously an homage to Dick and the themes important to the author. There is a character with the last name Taverner, the line "Flow my tears," is said by a police man, and Kevin Smith actually plays old Phil.
It utilizes the setting of California, movie-star politicians, lost memories, politically-charged starlets, mass media, and modern paranoia as themes with which Kelly crafts a story that is nearly impenetrable. However, I don't think it was Kelly's intentions to simply tell a story. Rather, the film is more about it's themes and atmosphere.
Southland Tales is the movie Phil would have made had he been a filmmaker.
