It's ambitious, I'll give it that. But Richard Kelly (the man we all can thank for "Donnie Darko") proves he has a lot to learn about structure in this sprawling mess of a movie. As fascinating as it is frustrating, "Southland Tales" has a lot to say about the state of today's society, but can't get a good grasp on what that means.
