Review of Southern Comfort (1981) by John O — 17 Feb 2009
Definitely not the best Walter Hill movie (The Warriors and Streets of Fire carry that honor), but Southern Comfort is a great action movie full of lots of suspense. It takes almost 20 minutes to get rolling, but once the hillbilly madness sets in, Southern Comfort enters full-on Deliverance mode.
The best thing going for it is the cast. Carradine is excusable, but Fred Ward, Powers Boothe, and Brion James are good in everything, and Peter Coyote plays Peter Coyote, which is hit-or-miss. Otherwise, I wasn't bored by it, and I would certainly watch it if it came on TV.
