Review of South Pacific (1958) by John R — 03 Jan 2009
Probably the most topical and poignant of the Rogers and Hammerstein Canon, this film could have been great, but fell short. It was filmed with some sort of strange light filters for the songs, which gave the film a very weird, other worldly affect.
But the performances, especially by Mitzi Gaynor, are top notch, and the story, about overcoming racism, is timeless. Of course, the music is top notch too.
