Review of South Pacific (1958) by Calvin C — 15 Oct 2011
The memorable music is not the problem nor is the acting. It's the directing and choice of how to stage the songs that bothered me a little. Joshua Logan who directed the original stage play, decided to get fancy and use color filters for each song, making one think they have glaucoma. On the big screen, it might of looked amazing, but translated on the small screen, it just looks silly. Some scenes also feel static and drags in the middle section. Luckily, the movie picks up in the third act. Again, great music, great songs, great acting, but some questionable directing. Still a solid musical from the golden age of musicals.
Grade: B.
