Review of South Pacific (1958) by Belle D — 17 Mar 2009
I had high expectations as it took me 39 years to finally see this classic. Music was great. Island setting was romantic. Mitzi Gaynor and costumes were beautiful! Storyline was disappointing. I loved when she sang about washing that man right out of her hair! Too cute! And I keep singing, "I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with a wonderful guy!!!" Bloody Mary singing "Happy Talk" to Liat and Joe truly tickled me! Adorable song.
This movie could have been developed better with a more convincing combat scene. The character of Luther Billis was quite humorous. The death of Joe seemed to abrupt and not mourned appropriately. Nellie's unsure feelings were too shallow and could have been more vulnerable with a gradual adoration of Emil's children.
The racial issues were tactfully presented given its debut in the late 50s.
