Review of Soul Kitchen (2009) by Ian H — 24 Apr 2010
This film was simply a true joy and delight; a wonderful ride to be taken on. And it is funny: exceptionally so, particularly as the comedy was not forced nor overdone, but came from the great script as well as the timing and expressions of the talented actors and actresses.
The plot concerns a guy running Soul Kitchen [ a restaurant which serves ready-to-cook [i.e. frozen] food] and whpse girlfriend moves to China for work. Add in a chef brought in from a swank restaurant after being fired, a brother who is in gaol, health department and tax investigations, and a chance meeting with a school friend who is into real estate, plus some more, and you have fast-paced and multi-faceted comedic look at life and its struggles and hopes.
I've only seen one other Fath Akin work, 'The Edge of Heaven' [Auf der anderen Seite], and will see 'Kebab Connection' soon, but this film needs to be seen on its own and seen for what it is: a great comedy and feel-good movie. For it is all that and more.
