Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Wayne K — 27 Jan 2019
You can forgive a lot in a movie that's this original and daring, and Sorry To Bother You is never afraid to go in some pretty wild directions. It might choose too many targets, and as such has a hard time hitting them all with the same frequency.
The main targets are capitalism, corporate greed, cultural identity and some others which likely snuck in without me noticing. It's full of laugh out loud moments, and some of the biggest ones come from simply acknowledging the absurdity of the scenarios.
Most of the characters don't get a lot of time to develop, but it's a film more about escalating circumstances than any individual characters. The lead is largely powerless to do anything about what happens around him, regardless of how unethical or downright cruel it is.
I was glad that it wasn't another movie about how awful white people are, since we've already seen plenty of them this year. It might get a little too crazy and overloaded for its own good at times, but the inspired insanity is what often makes it so compulsively watchable.
