Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Pamela L — 27 Jul 2018
My biggest issue with, "Sorry to Bother You," is that it is branded as a comedy. Yes, there are a few laughs. However, it is more sci-fi and surreal than it is comedy. I went with the expectation that this would be a funny spoof on a call center environment.
It starts off that way. The lead character, Cassius (Cash) Green, is applying for a telemarketing position with the RegalView company. Even his nickname "Cash" implies his drive to succeed chase the big bucks.
What happens when that becomes a person's primary motivation? You sacrifice your principles and lose your sense of identity. At first, Cassius is failing miserably at RegalView and not making his sales.
A co-worker tells him to use his "white voice" and he will sell more. This works but at the cost of losing one's own identity to make the sale. This has further implications to Cassius' promotion to power caller for a dubious company dubbed as "WorryFree.
" Cassius is willing to do anything to get ahead. This costs him friends along the way. Only until he "sees" what the WorryFree company and the CEO Steve Lift are up to does he realize what he is promoting.
..modern day slavery. This is where the sci-fi and surreal part of the movie kick in. If you are looking for a lot of belly laughs from a movie that is branded as a comedy, I would skip this one. The performances are good.
The story line was far-fetched but it does raise questions about how far a person should go in pursuit of wealth. Is it worth sacrificing one's own identity? This movie takes that question to the extreme.
