Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Dan P — 22 Jul 2018
While Idiocracy was a landmark film, it largely sidestepped actually blaming the state of the future on anything too specific. Sorry to Bother You is not afraid of making a real and cogent point, blaming our overall state of decay on our materialism and drive for more, along with our lack of humanity toward our neighbors.
It's a movie that looks not at our distant, unaccountable future but at our present, holding up a mirror and asking us if we like what we see. It tells us that if we do end up living in a true idiocracy, it won't be because we watched too much TV or drank too many energy drinks, it'll be because we traded our human dignity to escape poverty imposed on us by a degenerating capitalism which has lost all regard for morality and the common good.
