Review of Sorority Row (2009) by Al M — 12 Aug 2010
Okay, I always feel the need to defend myself before I say I enjoyed a horror remake. I do loathe the fact that hollywood must remake every horror film ever instead of coming up with fresh ideas--I mean is it really that hard to come up with a plot for a new slasher film? That being said, I enjoyed Sorority Row for what it was: pure slasher fun.
The film is only a remake in the broader sense of things--nothing from the original film appears verbatim in this updating. And there are lots of fun deaths. Sorority Row is old school slasher, which I appreciate at least: it features the most brutal deaths possible, it's funny, the characters are hot but so despicable you want them to die, there's the traumatic event that incites the chain of murders, etc.
Sure, it's probably still a misogynistic genre if you bother to think about it. But the slasher genre is one that doesn't require thought--it is what it is. If you enjoy the genre, then you will probably dig Sorority Row.
If don't, then don't bother seeing the film. Plus, what's more fun than watching stupid frat boys and vapid, shallow sorority girls get what's coming to them? No offense intended....
