Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Elizabeth S — 27 Sep 2007
This film is essentially about the inner tortures haunting us from our pasts, carved from choices alone, and how they play on the present. When you realise what Sophie's "choice" actually refers to - an unimaginable decision she is forced to make when arriving at Auschwitz concentration camp (starkly shot in black and white) - you realise also why she cannot live with this decision at the end of the movie.
Very tragic, very moving, excellently acted and utterly deserving of an Oscar for Meryl Steep.
