Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Valeria G — 12 Oct 2007
Great adaptation of the over-written Styron novel. Amazing acting. Meryl Streep nails, absolutely nails, the Polish accent! She sounds exactly like my Polish grandmother. Kevin Kline was born to play Nathan - his gift for accents and hammy overacting, tempered by his dramatic turns, fit in perfectly with Nathan's manic personality. And Peter MacNicol (Cage in Ally McBeal, Janosz in Ghostbusters II) completes the mostly platonic trio as the perfect shy, sexually frustrated southerner in the heart of Jewish Brooklyn.
A very powerful movie, even if you know the "twist" ending (which I did).
