Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by C.j. A — 28 Dec 2009
Meryl Streep ignites the screen, but her best work is found later in her career, when she and her directors allowed her characters more subtlety and depth. Here, she is caught in a Southern melodrama that goes down smooth, if you're in the mood for a glossy cinematic soap.
But it's biggest offense is probably its whole thematic core - that SPOILER ALERT choosing which of your kids gets to live is exactly like choosing between boyfriends.
