Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Andy K — 07 May 2010
Underwhelming drama about a holocaust survivor, living in post-WW2 New York, who reveals a devastating secret. Meryl Streep gives the usual tour de force performance you would expect, but the major flaw is the plot.
Too much time is wasted on the New York storyline and nowhere near enough is given to Sophie's backstory. The 2hrs 30mins run time feels like a chore in places, especially in the first half as Kline and MacNicol's characters are introduced and relationships are gradually forged.
The reveal at the end feels like it has been tagged on rather than as a crescendo to Sophie's struggle and I can't help thinking this could have been so much better.
