Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Kristina K — 17 Jun 2011
You know the concentration camp story? the one told vaguely in flashback for maybe 15 minutes of screen time? that should have been the entirety of this movie. the titular choice and its repercussions would have made a much more rich and interesting story.
we only see a couple minutes of it near the end, however, and instead get drudgery. this film has plenty of conflict, but no real reason for it because it seemingly has no point. it's not about romantic relationships, but they're there.
it's not about friendship, but that's there too. it's not really about an up-and-coming writer, but wouldn't you know, he's in there too. the story is all over the place, and at the same time goes virtually nowhere.
there's so many elements that could have been absolutely engrossing, but they all get passed over in favor of some larger, vaguer whole.
