Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Gavin S — 04 Aug 2012
Well...it wasn't quite what I thought, but it was an experience. It certainly doesn't rush through anything, in fact, it might take just a little too much time in places, and I never think it's a good sign if I start to feel like a movie is becoming borderline tedious in parts.
Streep is impressive in her Oscar winning turn as Sophie running the full range of emotions from joy to heartbreak and all those in between. However, the real revelation to me in this film was Kevin Kline.
This was Kline's first major role, transitioning from Broadway, and he brings the vitality, zest for life, and energy into this film that it's so lacking in many other parts. I think the movie is much better when it focuses on the romance between Nathan and Sophie, two very damaged people who are able to find some solace with each other.
Stingo's character struck me a lot as Nick from Great Gatsby and his idyllic view of Nathan/Sophie Jay/Daisy. Great chemistry between Kline and Streep really saves this one from mediocrity. And I almost feel bad for not having liked it more.
