Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Tania C — 26 Aug 2007
A film carried solely by it's leading actress, the juggernaut of poignant performances, the queen herself, Mrs. Meryl Streep. So human and loveable is Sophie that audiences can't help but shed a tear every time her eyes begin watering, laughing when her frail voice opens in a jolly rave, and simply stare as she recalls the horrors of her past.
Apart from this breathtaking performance however, the film is shockingly slow and melodramatic. Character's aren't quite developed enough to ring true to audiences, and small side-plots are irrelevant and almost totally forgettable in the face of Streep's devastating saga.
A film worth seeing if you can stomach it, but to be avoided if slow-as-Molasses scripts are your kryptonite.
