This movie, based on the William Styron novel of the same name, teaches you about life with a depth of beauty and tragedy unmatched by any other movie I've ever seen. The acting is transdendent, the story is genius, and the simple, hypnotic music of Marvin Hamlisch is exquisite.
The movie has moments of wonderful humor and warmth, but in the end it is the tragedy that teaches the sacredness of life, of Sophie's life and your own and everyone around you. Rilke could have been talking about this movie when he said "Nearby is the country they call life.
You will recognize it by its seriousness.".
