Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Adam K — 10 Mar 2009
I kept thinking to myself that this was similar to The Reader in some ways, but also clearly different. A great performance by one of the most professional actresses of all-time, a story about the holocaust and emotional feelings stemming from that experience.
Sophie's Choice was more romantic, and hinted at times of a joyous life after tragedy and was different creatively. The two parts of the movie were so completely different from each other visually and tonally and that was the point.
The flashbacks were dull, dark and bleak. Meryl Streep wasn't in this movie, that was Sophie you were watching. Certainly not flawless, but a very emotional and thought-provoking movie nonetheless.
