Review of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) by T P — 28 Apr 2007
Everyone with a basic intelligence and a conscience of any amount needs to see this film. If it could happen then, it could happen again --but don't let that scare you away, because this film never preaches, rather it relies on encouraging the conscious viewer to ponder things going on around us in the world today.
What I find so undeniably terrifying about the Third Reich is that Germany was one of the most advanced, educated societies on the planet and yet the Nazis were able to easily rise to an almost incomprehensible level of power.
This wasn't Rwanda, or Uganda, or even tribal Iraq. It was Germany, the birthplace of some of the greatest minds this world has ever known, and the birthplace also of some the world's darkest moments.
Wonderfully acted and amazingly simple, this film should be mandatory viewing for all. Alexander Held delivers a performance so chilling and so believable that it made me wonder if he is an underground Nazi supporter.
...or simply a brilliant actor (I'm opting for the latter to be true). His role could not have been easy to portray so convincingly for a German man living in these times. Prepare to read --it's a German film with English subtitles.
