Review of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) by Edward K — 20 Apr 2015
This movie tells the story of young German student Sophie Scholl, who, at age 21, was accused of high treason, along with her brother, for spreading the ideals of the White Rose an underground resistance movement which dared to contradict a government where freedom of speech wasn't allowed. Julia Jentsch introduces the audience to a character who stands her ground even when confronted by people who refuse to listen. Even when given a chance to escape her demise, Sophie doesn't back away from the consequences of daring to think freely in Hitler's Germany, which reveals the inner strength of this character.
"Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" is a touching movie that invites the viewer to reflect upon courage, as well as to value the struggle for freedom of speech, an issue that still isn't totally valued in our world.
