Review of Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (1996) by Jim K — 31 Jul 2007
I watched this movie hoping that it would be similar to the other Sonic renditions. I have to say that I left this movie feeling as if it were rather average with nothing special to make this movie memorable. First, while the movie has some good ideas, it just never follows through with a plot that makes any sense. Although they do make a case that Robotnik lies 99 out of 100 times, there is nothing to support a reason for Sonic to trust him to save both the land of the sky and the land of darkness. So therefore I will propose that the whole premise of the plot is way too shaky.
Secondly, if Sarah had a real problem with Dr. Robotnik, (his hostage to motivate Sonic) why in the world is there a scene with Robotnik and Sarah playing video games? Furthermore, why is Sarah's remark, "I'll stop being your hostage," considered a serious threat to him?
I also felt that the voice acting was incredibly sub-par, even for the well known anime distributor ADV. Sonic sounded way out of character and although Tails is supposed to be younger, he sounded way too nasally.
Finally, when all was said and done I felt like the movie had a terrible conclusion. Really the only justification for an ending was that the main conflicts were resolved, but why is there an abrupt ending with everybody chasing each other? Well your guess is as good as mine.
To conclude, if you are fan of Sonic then you might enjoy the action in this movie, but for everyone else you might as well watch something else.
