Review of Song to Song (2017) by Bart G — 03 Apr 2017
?It's all a stage show.?
?We can't die.?
This film is sweet like honey. Perhaps the sweetest on the market?yes, and possibly the sweetest ever rendered, too. If you aren't familiar with the director's work this will probably leave you confused and cold by its unconventional nature. Stylistically daring and boldly original, this is the work of visionary filmmaker: Terrence Malick. You see, Malick operates in a-whole-nother territory of filmmaking: out past left-field, out of the cosmos, and fresh into the collective consciousness is where. This film is not for those keen on allegories or deciphering esoteric and existential works of art. Because this is one of those works: subtle and elusive, yet beautiful and transformative all in one. It tackles the weight of life, love, fate, deception, and how knowledge controls everything in the cosmos. Meditate on it and watch as the cinematic poetry unfolds before you. I was balling my eyes out in the theater several times?it's so moving?and so, so rewarding. Through sheer beauty and horror, this is easily the most realistic portrait of life that I've ever seen on film. It's a coalescing collage of philosophy and imagery that packs a whirlwind of nuance and emotion. Simply one of the most poetic and endearing of its nature. I've never felt so moved, while simultaneously so isolated from the rest of an audience at the theater. The people around me just sat repulsed and were openly expressing their agony towards the film. "Does it ever end?" and "I thought this was going to be a musical, not a porno!"?two rather amusing sentiments the old ladies seated near me vocalized. Forewarning: know what you're getting yourself into before buying a ticket. This is not for the uninitiated. This rests among the best of arthouse cinema. Simply put, it's a transcendent rollercoaster of modern art. Now, eat the honey, for we are infinite ????
